Environmental Law Courses

In the classroom, we emphasize policy issues as a backdrop to the legal framework, because we believe that lawyers who think through policy ramifications of the law will better serve society into the future. We also highlight the practical aspects of law, seeking always to convey an understanding of how courts, agencies, legislative bodies and international forums actually function in the broad spectrum of environmental decision-making. And we devote consistent attention to the public's role in such processes.

While devoting curricular attention to traditional regulatory mechanisms of environmental law, we also encourage students to explore new approaches to environmental conflicts. Our Appropriate Dispute Resolution program gives students exposure to a multitude of tools increasingly used to create consent-based solutions to some of the most intractable environmental problems of our time. Our Center for Law and Entrepreneurship offers opportunities for students to approach environmental policy through the private business sector. Regular course offerings focus attention on the emerging law surrounding climate law and policy, conservation easements and land trusts, and tax courses explore non-regulatory market incentives for achieving environmental policy. Students have limitless curricular opportunities to focus on innovative mechanisms to address environmental problems.
